International Rock Flipping Day started in 2007 as an idea by David Bonta. A group of bloggers created a movement to get people outdoors to discover nature by flipping over rocks to discover the tiny world below them.
Several years later IRFD was continued by the Wanderin’ Weeta blog and continued to be on the second Sunday in September each year.
In 2016, Wild Spirit Education naturalist/educator Paul Fehringer was introduced to IRFD by the Education Director from Jamestown Audubon in Jamestown, NY. Excited about a new way to get young people outdoors to explore nature, Paul embraced the idea and not only participated in the day but also started to promote it.
In 2018 Paul noticed that no one was really promoting the day any more and put together the IRFD website and Facebook page. Each year Paul and Wild Spirit Education, Inc. encourage people to get outdoors to discover nature.
